At Ashwood Support Services we have worked with people diagnosed with neurological conditions since our inception. Primarily, we have spent countless hours supporting people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and different forms of epilepsy but have also worked with those who are diagnosed with functional neurologic disorder (FND).
Like many of the disabilities we work with, neurological conditions are often invisible and as a result we understand that often people can be very dismissive simply because they can’t immediately see the effect a persons disability has on there lives. We understand how frustrating this can be and as a result we pride ourselves on being able to advocate (if needed) to a range of different organisations and areas on behalf of NDIS participants.
At Ashwood we have experience working with participants with complex conditions and being able to follow seizure management plans developed by health and allied health professionals. We also take the time to understand what might be a trigger for seizures past what the layperson might expect. To name a few, we understand that different temperatures, fatigue levels, hormonal changes and even the type of food recently eaten by someone could be a contributing factor to how high of a seizure risk they are that day. Conversely, seizures can also be entirely unpredictable and we are very aware of always being alert to the fact someone may have one at any stage with no easily identifiable reason.
Likewise for MS, we understand that asides from the everyday impacts someone might feel, flare ups can happen at any time but can also have their own triggers. Being aware of what could foreseeably trigger a flare up and being able to plan accordingly is vitally important, even though again, it may not always be possible. Being adaptable and changing plans, essentially expecting the best but preparing for the worst, on any given day is a key part of our support workers roles.
