Many of our staff, including our managing director Hannah, identify as LGBTQIA+. As a result, we are a leader when it comes to providing supports to those who also identify as part of the rainbow community. Hannah is transgender and we have support workers who identify across all areas of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, including those who are amazing allies. This means that we work with a range of LGBTQIA+ organisations regularly and are able to link you in with any other supports, groups or medical professionals you might need help accessing.
All of our support workers have experience supporting members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and as a result you can be assured that Ashwood Support Services is a safe space for you regardless of who you love or how you identify.
Ashwood Support Services is also a safe space for any sex workers who may be NDIS participants, and we understand the unique circumstances and discrimination you may face when accessing services.
Hannah came out as transgender in 2015 at the age of 26, having long struggled with her gender. She understands how scary it can be to carry the weight of a secret that potentially not everyone will fully comprehend and accept. As a result of her own lived experience, Hannah is incredibly well connected throughout Australia with gender affirming healthcare providers, allied health professionals and other services someone struggling with their gender identity in particular may want to link in with.
In addition to this is Hannah is able to and often will use her own experiences to give people an insight into what to expect should they wish to pursue gender affirming care. This is not just related to the first step of finding an understanding and knowledgeable psychologist or GP, but what to expect from hormone treatment, electrolysis or any other gender affirming treatment people may wish to undertake.
Further, she is able to help navigate and guide people through the WPATH guidelines and processes for being able to access gender reassignment surgery. She also understands what the recovery post this procedure is like and what is required, as well as having well established relationships with the teams of multiple surgeons in Australia.
Whilst not all of our team have obviously been through this process themselves, Hannah possesses a wealth of knowledge with all of the Ashwood team and people we support who might find this information helpful at any stage.
